AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team posted a 3-2 victory over Francis Marion Friday evening.
The Pacers are now 22-2 on the year, including 6-1 in league play. The Patriots are 15-11 on the year, including 2-5 against conference foes.
Head coach
Glenn Cox's team was led by
Christine Carroll's match-high 20 kills, including her 1,000
th career kill.
Avery Macklin tied her career high with 16 kills while
Alie Smith and
Anita Cookey-Gam added 15 and 10, respectively. Smith notched a double-double with a career-high 30 digs.
Alli Bell garnered a double-double with a career-high 63 assists to go along with 10 digs. For good measure, she added two blocks and two kills.
Rebecca Martinez led everyone with 34 digs while
Kari Mercer chipped in 18 to go along with her career-high two kills.
Emily Duggan posted 13 digs and a match-best three aces.
The 74 kills by USC Aiken marked the fifth most in school history and tied for the fourth most in a five-set match. The 113 digs marked the ninth most in school history and the sixth most in a five-set match.
Bell's 63 assists are tied for the fifth most in school history and the fourth most in a five-set match. The 34 digs by Martinez marks the ninth most in a five-set match in school history.
After dropping the first set, USC Aiken netted three points in a row to take a 23-21 lead, with two coming via errors and a kill from Carroll. Up by one at 23-22, Bell and Carroll stuffed a shot before Smith hammered home the set winner.
The Pacers lost the third set, but bounced back to take the fourth frame. Leading 7-4,
Abbey Schad's kill starteda 5-0 spurt. Macklin had one kill and Smith had two more to make it 12-4. Up 18-10, Macklin and Cookey-Gam posted kills. After a miscue by the visitors and a kill from Smith, Cox's team held a 22-10 lead. Carroll made it 23-11. Up 24-11, Duggan served up an ace to force a fifth set.
USC Aiken trailed 4-3 in the final stanza, but Smith and Bell notched kills to take a 5-4 lead. Down 7-6, Schad found the court for a point. Smith's ace made it 8-7. The teams traded sides, but USC Aiken kept momentum. Macklin had a kill and another mistake by FMU pushed it to 10-7. Up by two at 11-9, Macklin started a 4-0 spurt to end the match. Cookey-Gam tallied a kill. Leading 14-9, Carroll finished the match with a thunderous kill.
