Pacers Sweep Bobcats, 3-0

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team posted a 3-0 victory over Georgia College Friday evening.

The Pacers are now 20-1 on the year, including a 4-0 in league play. The Bobcats are now 6-11 on the year and 0-2 against conference competition.

Head coach Glenn Cox's team was led by Abbey Schad and Alie Smith as both garnered 12 kills. Kelsey Spurlin totaled seven kills while Christine Carroll and Anita Cookey-Gam notched six and five kills, respectively.

Alli Bell tallied a double-double with 32 assists and 11 digs. Rebecca Martinez led everyone with 32 digs. It marked the fifth-most digs in a three-set match in school history. Emily Duggan registered 15 digs while Kari Mercer and Smith posted 12 and 10 digs, respectively.

In the first set, USC Aiken led 6-4 before an error gave service back to the home team. With Martinez at the line, the Pacers embarked on a 10-0 spurt. Smith had three kills while Schad had two and Bell added one. USC Aiken continued its solid play, finishing the frame after two kills from Spurlin and an ace from Schad.

In the second frame the home squad led 16-10 before Carroll slammed home a kill. She posted another point prior to Mercer finding Bell for the kill. Bell and Carroll combined for a block to make it 19-10. Although the Bobcats pulled within four at 19-15, Smith stopped the run to make it 20-15. That started a 6-0 spurt to win 25-15.

USC Aiken took control of the third stanza when Schad blasted home back-to-back kills to push the score to 9-5. After a miscue by the visitors, Spurlin garnered two kills for a 12-5 edge. Moments later, Mercer's ace gave the home team a 20-13 advantage. Bell and Schad stuffed an attempt for a 22-14 lead. Smith's left-handed kill put the score at 23-15 before the teams traded points in the 25-17 victory.

The Pacers return to action Saturday when they host Augusta at 2 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at PacerSports.com.
