AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team registered a 3-1 victory over Augusta Saturday afternoon.
The Pacers are now 21-1 on the year, including 5-0 in league play. The Jaguars are 16-6 overall and 1-2 against conference foes.
Head coach
Glenn Cox's team was paced by
Alie Smith's 17-kill, 16-dig performance.
Christine Carroll totaled 14 kills, six blocks and four digs.
Anita Cookey-Gam and
Brittany French added six kills apiece.
Alli Bell notched a double-double with 41 assists and 11 digs to go along with four kills, three blocks and an ace.
Defensively,
Rebecca Martinez led the way with 29 digs.
Kari Mercer totaled 17 digs while
Emily Duggan chipped in 11.
In the first frame, USC Aiken embarked on a 13-3 spurt to put the score at 15-6 in favor of the team. Leading 10-6, Smith hammered home a kill. Two errors by the visitors forced a time-out. Out of the break, Schad tallied a kill while Smith served up an ace. The Pacers pushed the advantage to 10 when Bell and Carroll blocked a shot. The team maintained the margin, finishing off the frame on a kill by Schad to make it 25-15.
After dropping the second set, USC Aiken rebounded for a 25-18 win in the third frame. Tied at 14-14,
Anita Cookey-Gam broke the tie with a kill. Bell and Carroll added kills for a 17-14 edge. Leading 20-17, Smith and
Brittany French each added kills en route to the seven-point win.
Leading 12-11 in the fourth set, Carroll and Cookey-Gam pounded home kills. Carroll took a pass from Bell for a 15-11 edge. Up 21-17, French had a kill prior to Carroll blocking a Jaguar. The visitors pulled within three at 24-21, but Bell floated a pass to Cookey-Gam for the final point.
