AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team lost an 88-67 decision to Lander Saturday afternoon.
The Pacers are now 9-9 overall and 5-7 in league play. The Bearcats are now 13-5 overall and 10-2 in the PBC.
Head coach
Mark Miller's team was led by
Kwajelin Farrar's team-high 14 points and game-best nine rebounds. She also swatted a game-high three shots.
Kyrie' Chandler added 13 points while
Janae' Simpson chipped in 10 markers off the bench.
Star Toomey snagged six rebounds while
Sade Johnson added six boards in the loss.
Trailing 15-8 with 1:07 to play in the first quarter, Simpson drilled a runner off a pass from
Melyk Taouil to close the gap to 15-10 heading into the second stanza.
Down 18-10, Chandler nailed a three-point shot to get things going. Farrar hit a pair of free throws before
Grace Crawford canned a shot to make it 18-17. The Bearcats took a 30-25 lead, but Simpson hit two charity tosses with 3:18 to go. After a jumper by
Phenicia Howard cut the deficit to one,
Star Toomey converted a lay-up to give the Pacers a 31-30 advantage with 1:50 to go in the half.
The teams traded baskets and USC Aiken held a 34-33 lead after an old-fashioned three-point play by Howard. However, Lander managed to post a 37-34 halftime score.
The Pacers rattled off the first four points of the third quarter for a 38-37 lead. All four points were scored by inside jumpers from Farrar. The Bearcats embarked on a 17-2 spurt for a lead they would not relinquish. Miller's team continued to battle, pulling within nine at 55-46 on Farrar's lay-up at the 2:42 mark of the stanza. However, the home squad was unable to get any closer the rest of the way.
For the game, USC Aiken buried 27-of-50 from the floor (54 percent). The squad out-rebounded the visitors 42-25.
