AUGUSTA, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team registered a 69-49 victory at Augusta Wednesday evening.
The Pacers are now 10-9 on the season and 6-7 in league play. The Jaguars are 4-14 overall and 3-9 against conference foes.
Head coach
Mark Miller's team was led by
Kwajelin Farrar's 18 points.
Kyrie' Chandler connected on 13 points while
Melyk Taouil added eight points in the win.
Alex Canady,
Star Toomey and
Madison Williams had six points apiece. Canady distributed a game-high five assists.
Sade Johnson was outstanding, snagging a game-best 11 rebounds. She also dished out four assists.
USC Aiken jumped out to a 12-2 lead just 4:14 into the game. Tied at 2-2, Farrar hit a lay-up before finding Chandler for a three-ball. Chandler connected on another shot from downtown before Johnson found Farrar for a lay-up for the 10-point advantage. Leading 17-7, Taouil sliced through the defense for an inside shot. Williams found Toomey for a lay-up before finding the bottom of the net for two and a 23-7 margin.
Janae' Simpson's jumper from the baseline off a pass from
Phenicia Howard extended the advantage to 25-9 heading into the second period.
Miller's team pushed the score to 39-15 at the 1:48 mark of the second quarter when
Kanna Suzuki found Taouil for a jumper. Leading 39-19, Chandler dished out a nifty pass to Toomey for a lay-up just before the buzzer, giving the Pacers a 41-19 working margin at the break.
The Jaguars cut the lead to 18 at 47-29 with 3:53 to go in the third, but that was as close as the home team would get. The Pacers embarked on a 9-0 spurt to end the quarter.
Alex Canady hit a pair of charity tosses at the 3:18 mark to get things going. Simpson snagged an offensive board and converted an old-fashioned three-point play. Taouil hit a lay-up before Suzuki drilled both free throws to close out the stanza at 56-29.
For the game, Miller's team connected on 27-of-54 from the floor (50 percent). The team also hit 12-of-15 from the charity stripe (80 percent).
The squad had a 43-19 advantage on the glass, including an 18-7 margin on the offensive end of the court. USC Aiken tallied 24 second-chance points in the win.
