AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team swept a pair of matches Saturday, earning 3-0 wins over Queens and Barton.
The Pacers are now 8-2 on the season.
In the opener against Queens, USC Aiken was led by
Alie Smith's 14-kill, 10-dig effort for a double-double.
Christine Carroll hammered home 10 kills while
Kayla Duggan contributed nine.
Brittani Vialdores registered seven kills in the victory.
Ali Kirk dished out a match-best 21 assists while
Alli Bell registered a double-double with 15 assists and 12 digs.
Defensively,
Rebecca Martinez posted 33 digs while
Kelsey Spurlin contributed 12.
At the net, Vialdores accounted for a career-high four solo blocks while Carroll had one.
Tied at 3-3 in the first frame, head coach
Glenn Cox's team rattled off 13 of the next 14 points, essentially putting the set away. Duggan started the run while Carroll posted back-to-back kills through the first four points of the spurt. Carroll, Smith and Kirk finished off the run with back-to-back-to-back kills.
Anita Cookey-Gam and Smith found the court for back-to-back kills, finishing the set with the 25-16 win.
In the second stanza, USC Aiken held a 19-18 lead before Smith and Kirk posted kills. Vialdores stuffed home a block to make it 22-18. Three straight errors by the visitors gave the set to the Pacers, 25-19.
Tied at 8-8 in the third set, Cox's group was tied at 8-8 before Kirk started a 5-0 run. After the Royals scored a point to make it 13-9, Vialdores answered with two straight kills. USC Aiken made it 20-10 on a kill from Duggan en route to the 25-12 victory.
In the nightcap, Carroll led the way with a match-high 11 kills while hitting .370. Smith and Duggan had nine kills each while Spurlin and Vialdores added seven and five, respectively.
Bell led the way with a match-best 22 assists to go along with eight digs. Kirk chimed in with 17 assists.
Defensively, Martinez posted a match-high 34 digs while Smith and Vialdores tallied two blocks each.
In the first set, Smith and Spurlin posted kills in a 3-0 spurt, making it 20-14. Leading 22-17, Duggan had a kill. An error pushed it to 24-17 before Carroll slammed home the winning point.
USC Aiken trailed 2-1 in the second frame before a 6-0 run gave the team a 7-2 edge. During the run, Carroll had a kill as did Spurlin and Bell. The Pacers held a 24-20 advantage, but the Bulldogs pulled within two before Duggan sliced the defense for the final point.
Holding a 22-13 lead in the third, USC Aiken saw the visitors rattle off four straight points before a miscue made it 23-17. After a point by Barton, an error by the visitors made it 24-18.
Anita Cookey-Gam ended the match with a kill.
