AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team posted a 3-0 win over Paine Thursday afternoon in a non-conference contest.
The Pacers are now 9-2 on the season while the Lions fall to 2-2.
Head coach
Glenn Cox's team was led by
Anita Cookey-Gam's eight kills and nine digs.
Kayla Duggan and
Avery Macklin notched five kills apiece while
Christine Carroll and
Okwunne Ogbogu tallied four kills each.
Alli Bell and
Ali Kirk dished out 14 assists apiece. Kirk and Ogbogu sliced the defense with four aces each.
Defensively,
Rebecca Martinez posted a match-high 16 digs while adding a kill. At the net,
Logan McMullin, Ogbogu and Birittani Vialdores accounted for three blocks each.
Kelsey Spurlin chipped in a pair of blocks in the victory.
For the match, USC Aiken rattled off 11 aces and totaled 57 points.
The Pacers started the match off with 12 straight points behind the strong serving of Kirk. She wrapped up all four of her aces during that time. USC Aiken pushed it to 17-1 after kills from Cookey-Gam, Macklin and Duggan. Leading 21-7, Cox's team scored four straight to end the frame.
Up 12-8 in the second stanza, McMullin hammered home a kill before Martinez served up an ace. Ogbogu blocked a shot to make it 15-8. Leading 15-12, USC Aiken embarked on a 7-0 run to put the set away, with the last point coming via Bell's ace.
The Pacers jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the third frame, capped off by a block from Macklin and McMullin and a kill from McMullin. The Lions pulled within nine at 22-13 before Spurlin found the court for a kill. The dyad of McMullin and Vialdores blocked an attempt before Cookey-Gam ended the match with a kill.
