USC Aiken Sweeps Francis Marion In PBC Opener

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team posted a 3-0 victory over Francis Marion Saturday afternoon.

The Pacers are now 10-2 on the season, including 1-0 in league play. The Patriots fall to 8-7 overall and 0-2 against conference foes.

USC Aiken was paced Kayla Duggan's career-high 14 kills while hitting .360. Christine Carroll notched double figures with 11 kills while hitting .529. Brittani Vialdores tallied seven kills while Alie Smith and Kelsey Spurlin contributed six kills.

Alli Bell tallied a double-double with 18 assists and 11 digs while Ali Kirk dished out 18 assists.

Defensively, Rebecca Martinez tallied a match-best 18 digs while Smith chipped in 15 digs. Vannah Strozier accounted for nine kills.

At the net, Carroll led the way with four solo blocks while assisting on two others.

In the first set, head coach Glenn Cox's team broke open a close set with three straight points, making it 14-8 on an error by the visitors. The squad slowly stretched the margin to 10 as Duggan registered three straight kills. Leading 24-12, Duggan finished the frame with a thunderous kill for the win.

USC Aiken played from behind in the early going of the second frame. However, the team overcame the three-point deficit, embarking on a 6-0 spurt for a 16-12 edge. The squad was helped by three FMU miscues during the spurt. Cox's team stretched the margin out, rattling off seven of the final nine points. The frame ended with a service ace thanks in part to Strozier.

The Pacers played from behind in the third frame, but the squad rattled off three straight, knotting the score at 18-18. Carroll had a block and a kill in the spurt. The run propelled USC Aiken to the 25-21 victory.
