AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team lost a 3-2 decision to West Alabama Friday evening in a non-conference contest.
The Pacers are now 6-2 on the season while the Tigers improve to 5-2.
Head coach
Glenn Cox's team was led by
Alie Smith's match-high 18 kills. She notched a double-double by accounting for 16 digs.
Christine Carroll was in double figures for kills with 14.
Kayla Duggan added seven while
Okwunne Ogbogu and
Kelsey Spurlin contributed six kills apiece.
Avery Macklin and
Brittani Vialdores contributed five kills apiece while
Ali Kirk chipped in four.
Alli Bell tallied a double-double with a team-best 29 assists to go along with 12 digs. Kirk dished out 27 assists in the contest.
Defensively,
Rebecca Martinez posted a match-high 42 digs while
Kelsey Spurlin totaled a career-best 20.
After dropping the first set, the Pacers took control of the second frame by going on a 6-0 spurt. Carroll started the run with a kill. Ogbogu and Smith followed it up with back-to-back kills before Carroll served up an ace. Smith completed the run with a kill for a 14-7 edge.
Leading 18-16, the team posted four straight points. The squad traded points en route to the 25-20 victory.
Trailing 8-5 in the third frame, USC Aiken bounced back to knot the score at 12-12 on an ace by Smith. Two plays later, Duggan sparked a 5-0 run for an 18-13 margin. Holding set point at 24-18, Cox's group managed to put away the visitors after they scored five straight for the 25-23 win.
The Pacers led 21-19 in the fourth frame, but the Tigers rattled off six of the next seven points for the 25-22 win.
In the deciding fifth set, USC Aiken and UWA played to a 12-12 tie before the visitors tallied the final three points for the victory.
The Pacers return to action tomorrow when they host the final day of the USC Aiken Invitational. The team hosts Queens at 12:30 p.m., before facing Barton at 7 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at PacerSports.com.
