ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team posted a 3-0 win at Flagler Saturday afternoon in a league contest.
The Pacers improve to 12-2 overall and 3-0 in league play. The Saints fall to 6-10 overall and 1-3 against conference competition.
Alie Smith slammed home a match-high 15 kills, added nine digs and a pair of aces in the win.
Kayla Duggan tallied 11 kills while hitting a match-best .444 while
Christine Carroll hit .368 with nine kills. She was equally as impressive at the net, blocking three shots.
Kelsey Spurlin and
Brittani Vialdores chipped in six and five kills, respectively.
Ali Kirk distributed a match-high 27 assists while
Alli Bell dished out 16 assists.
Defensively,
Rebecca Martinez posted a match-high 27 digs, which is tied for 10
th most in a single match in a three-set contest in school history. Spurlin accounted for seven digs.
The first set was a back-and-forth affair. Carroll's kill made it 18-16. Leading 19-17 after a kill from Duggan, the Saints rattled off three straight points, forcing head coach
Glenn Cox to call a time-out. Playing in her home state, Smith answered with a kill to knot the score. Trailing 23-22, Vialdores slammed home a pass from Bell, sparking the Pacers. After a miscue by Flagler, Carroll found Bell's pass to be in the perfect spot to end the set, winning 25-23.
The Saints jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second stanza, but Duggan's kill tied it at 3-3. It also enabled to visitors to get on a roll, scoring six straight. Smith had a pair of kills in the run while Kirk completed the spurt with the rare setter kill. Leading 14-13, Spurlin and Duggan had back-to-back kills. A bad set and an attack error by Flager then allowed Spurlin to slam home a kill for a 19-13 edge. The Saints cut the advantage to three, but Duggan made it 23-18. Carroll and Kirk blocked an attempt before Carroll ended the set.
USC Aiken jumped out to an 11-3 advantage in what turned out to be the final set. Spurlin's kill made it 15-5 and Cox's team would not look back. Smith and Vialdores tallied the match winner on a block, giving the visitors the 25-11 win.
