VALDOSTA, Ga. – A school record fell and several career-high efforts led the University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over Spring Hill Saturday morning.
The Pacers are now 5-1 on the season while the Badgers fall from the ranks of the unbeaten and stand at 3-1.
Alie Smith,
Christine Carroll,
Kayla Duggan and
Brittani Vialdores all established career-high efforts for kills in the win. Smith led everyone with 21 while Carroll added 19. Duggan and Vialdores contributed 11 and nine, respectively. Smith added a double-double with 14 digs.
Carroll hit .341 and stuffed four attempts, including three by herself.
Alli Bell dished out 35 assists and added 16 digs for a double-double effort.
Ali Kirk was near perfect, distributing 28 assists on 31 sets.
Defensively,
Rebecca Martinez established a school record for digs in a four-set match with 43 digs. She also moved into ninth place on the career digs list at USC Aiken and is fourth in the 25-point rally scoring era. In all, five Pacers reached double figures in digs.
Vannah Strozier tallied 12 while
Kelsey Spurlin added 10 in the win.
Bell started off the first set with an ace. Smith followed it with a kill before Bell split the defense again for a 3-0 edge. The designated visitors tied it at 9-9 and the teams went back-and-forth for the next 10 points.
USC Aiken held a 17-15 advantage, but SHC rattled off five straight points. Head coach
Glenn Cox's team bounced back, knotting the score at 24-24 after trailing by two. Carroll slammed home a kill for a 25-24 advantage, but SHC tied the contest.
Trailing 27-26, Duggan found the court. An attack error by the visitors and a kill from Carroll gave the Pacers a 29-27 first-set victory.
After USC Aiken dropped the second frame, the teams were tied at 11 in the third stanza before Smith smashed a pass from Bell for a kill. Leading 13-12,
Kelsey Spurlin recorded two of the next three points, with the other coming from a SHC miscue.
Holding a 17-14 lead, Carroll's kill sparked a 5-0 spurt, putting the set away. Leading 24-16, Smith finished off the frame with a thunderous kill.
USC Aiken found itself trailing for much of the fourth set. Down 21-18 Smith found the court for a kill. An attack error made it 21-20. Trailing 22-20, a service error pulled Cox's team within one. Duggan hammered home a pass from Martinez, making it 22-22.
The teams traded the next four points before Duggan's attempt found the court off a pass from Kirk for a 25-24 advantage. Carroll finished off the match with a solo block.
