USC Aiken Sweeps Claflin

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team picked up a pair of wins over Claflin Wednesday behind stellar play from Brielle Jungblut, Hannah Price and Chandler Terrapin.

The squad won by scores of 4-3 and 4-0.

The Pacers are now 14-34 on the season while Claflin falls to 24-27.

Head coach Jerry Snyder's team fell behind in the opener 1-0, but the squad quickly knotted it in the bottom of the first inning.

Jungblut led off the stanza with a single. A sacrifice bunt from Katelyn Powell pushed her to second. Jungblut swiped third and raced home on a miscue, knotting the game at 1-1.

The visitors pushed the margin to 3-1 with a run in the fourth and fifth, but USC Aiken would quickly counter the opposition's scoring.

Jungblut led off the fifth with a single. She promptly swiped second and moved to third on a Powell single to right field. With two down, Sydney Kate Murphy belted an offering to left center field, plating Jungblut and Powell while tying the game at 3-3.

After neither team could score in the sixth or seventh, the Pacers ended things in the eighth. With one down, Maci Hutto doubled to center field and moved to third on Lyndie Dorgan's bloop single to right field. Jungblut stepped to the plate with two away and slapped a 1-0 offering down the left field line, scoring Hutto for the 4-3 win.

For the game, Jungblut led the way with a career-high four hits. She drove in one and scored twice while swiping a career-best three bases. Dorgan, Hutto and Stanley had two hits apiece while Murphy drove in two.

In the circle, Terrapin went the distance. She threw 147 pitches in the contest. Terrapin struck out five batters while walking two en route to the victory.

In the nightcap, the teams were scoreless through the first two frames. Jungblut led off the stanza with an infield single. She swiftly stole second, pushing her into 10th place on the career steals list. After a sacrifice bunt from Powell, Price laid down a squeeze and Jungblut raced home for the 1-0 edge. On the next pitch, Terrapin unleashed a 240-foot shot over the left field wall, giving the Pacers a 3-0 advantage.

Price worked the first 4.2 frames without allowing a base runner, but the perfect game bid came to a halt with a line drive single into center field.

In the bottom of the fifth, Price roped a single to right center field. Hanna Hyder came in as a pinch runner and scampered to second on a wild pitch. Two batters later, she raced home on Murphy's RBI single to left field.

In the nightcap, Terrapin went three-for-three with two RBI. Jungblut and Price added two hits apiece in the victory.

Price gave up just one hit and walked nobody while striking out four in the near-perfect game bid.

The Pacers return to action Sunday when they host UNC Pembroke starting at 1 p.m. Senior Day festivities will start at 12:45 p.m.
