Spence Stymies Bearcats With One-Hit Shutout

AIKEN, S.C. – University of South Carolina Aiken hurler Mitch Spence stymied Lander Friday evening, tossing a one-hit shutout in the 5-0 win.

The Pacers are now 27-16 on the year, including an 18-7 mark in league play.

Spence threw a complete game, giving up a mere single to right center field in the top of the first inning with two away. Aside from that, he turned away Bearcat after Bearcat. Spence walked just three batters, including just two over the final eight frames.

In the bottom of the first, Jose Bonilla chopped a 1-2 pitch about 20 feet in front of the plate. The high bounce allowed him to race to first safely. Two pitches later, Daulton Weeks provided what turned out to be the game-winning hit with a two-run blast over the left field wall.

With one down, Nile Goings singled and swiped second. Three batters later, Philip Watcher lifted a pitch to center field, allowing Goings to race home for a 3-0 edge.

The score remained the same until the sixth stanza. Brian Parreira led the frame off with a full-count walk. Goings walked on four straight pitches to put runners on first and second. With one away, Joey Smithers laced a double down the left field line, plating Parreira. Watcher's groundout allowed Goings to score for a 5-0 margin.

Spence continued his dominance over the next two innings. He walked one batter with one out in the ninth, but registered back-to-back fly ball outs to Goings, securing the 5-0 win.

It marked his second complete game of the season, with the first a 5-2 win over top-10 Columbus State. The one hit marked a career-best effort for him as a starter, with the previous low of two hits against the Cougars.

At the plate, Bonilla led the way with a pair of singles. Watcher and Weeks had two RBI apiece while Goings crossed home twice.

The Pacers return to action tomorrow at 4 p.m., in the second game of the series. Live stats and video will be available at PacerSports.com.
