Pacers Take The Series Over Mountain Lions

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team registered a 6-5 victory and 6-4 victory over Young Harris Saturday afternoon.

In the first game of the day, Mitch Spence got the starting nod on the mound. Through eight innings of work, he gave up eight hits and walked three while striking out seven.

After Young Harris managed to plate three runs in the bottom of the second, Head coach Kenny Thomas' team struck back with a run in the top of the third.

The Pacers came alive in the top of the fourth, plating four more runs to take the lead. Brady O'Neil led off with a single up the middle and was followed closely by Philip Watcher's single to left, placing runners on first and second. One batter later, Chandler Rogers was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Following that, Jose Bonilla flied out to center for a sacrifice bringing home O'Neil. Then Daulton Weeks stepped up to the plate and blasted a homer to right field that brought in Watcher and Rogers to make the score 5-3 in the Pacers' favor.

Things were fairly quiet on both sides until the Mountain Lions managed to score a run in the bottom of the seventh, bringing the game to 5-4.

USC Aiken answered by plating their final run in the top of the eighth on a lead-off home run by Joey Smithers to make it 6-4. Young Harris attempted to tie things up in the ninth, but only managed a single run, making the game 6-5 for the Pacers.

For the game, Weeks had three hits. O'Neil, Watcher, Smithers and Rogers all registered two, while Bonilla, Brian Parreira and Nile Goings had one hit apiece. Spence walked away with the win, and Daniel Wiggins took the save.

In the second game of the afternoon, Christian Aragon got the starting nod on the mound. Through six innings of work, he gave up two hits and walked three while striking out six.

Young Harris again took an early lead by scoring a run in the bottom of the first, but Head coach Kenny Thomas' team immediately answered in the top of the second. Goings started the inning with a single to left and was later brought home off a homer by O'Neil to make it 2-1 in favor of the Pacers.

The game was stagnant on the scoreboard until USC Aiken scored another run in the top of the fifth. With Rogers and Bonilla on first and second after a walk and single respectively,  Weeks shot a single to left field that pushed Rogers across home plate, making it 3-1 for the Pacers.

The Mountain Lions responded with a run in the bottom of the inning, bringing it to a close 3-2 game.

The Pacers brought another run home in the top of the seventh off a home run from Goings, but Young Harris kept up with a run in the bottom of the inning to make it 4-3.

Things were quiet on both sides, pushing the game to extra innings. In the top of the 10th though, the Pacers decided it was time to rally. With two outs in the book, Rogers hit a single to the shortstop, followed closely by a single to left from Bonilla that pushed Rogers all the way to third. When Weeks followed up with a double down the right field line, Rogers came across home plate and Bonilla went around to third. Then, when a failed pickoff attempt on Weeks ended in an error, Bonilla came home to make it 6-4 for the Pacers.

For the game, Bonilla, Weeks and Smithers had three hits each. Goings, Conner Durden and Rogers all registered two, while O'Neil and Parreira had one hit apiece. Blake Seigler took home the win.
