AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team picked up a 4-1 victory over Chowan Tuesday evening in a non-conference contest.
The Pacers are now 12-6 on the season.
In the second inning, head coach
Kenny Thomas' team had one out before
Brian Parreira ripped a double down the right field line. Five pitches later,
Joey Smithers smacked a double to the gap in left center field, scoring Parreira.
Philip Watcher pushed the margin to 2-0 moments later. He blasted a double to right field as Smithers crossed home.
The Hawks pulled within one in the next stanza. USC Aiken threatened to regain the two-run edge, placing two on in the bottom of the third, but a strikeout ended the inning.
With two outs in the fourth, Watcher singled to right and swiped second base.
Andre Brown III hit a shot into the field of play, driving in Watcher for a 3-1 lead.
USC Aiken added to the advantage in the eighth frame.
Solid pitching by
Brooks Calvo in a predetermined outing allowed him to get the win. He worked four frames, giving up one unearned run on three hits. Calvo struck out three in his outing.
Jacob Rye came in and tossed three stanzas of shutout ball. He also struck out three batters.
Blake Seigler came in and worked a scoreless ninth, getting the final two outs on a double play, for the save.
