Pacers Claim 5-4 Win

AMERICUS, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team posted a 5-4 victory at Georgia Southwestern in the second game of the three-game series.

The Pacers are now 16-8 on the season, including a 7-4 ledger in league play.

Head coach Kenny Thomas' team took a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning. With one down, Philip Watcher was hit by a pitch. Chandler Rogers reached on an error by the third baseman and promptly advanced to third. On the play, Watcher raced home for a 1-0 advantage. Jose Bonilla lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, plating Rogers for the 2-0 edge.

In the seventh, the Hurricanes plated four runs on six hits for a 4-2 lead. However, Thomas' team would battle back.

In the eighth, the visitors struck for three runs, taking a 5-4 lead.

Bonilla opened the frame with a double down the left field line. Joey Smithers recorded an infield base hit, putting two runners on. With one down, Conner Durden ripped a single to left field. An error by the fielder allowed Smithers to score after Bonilla had raced home, knotting the contest at 4-4.

After a pitching change, Nile Goings lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Durden for what turned out to be the game-winning run.

USC Aiken kept the Hurricanes off the board the rest of the way, picking up the one-run victory.

For the game, Bonilla led the way with a pair of hits, including a double. Goings, Smithers, Daulton Weeks, Durden and Rogers all had hits. Bonilla, Durden and Goings each drove in a run.

Mitch Spence got the starting nod on the mound and worked 6.1 innings. He struck out six and gave up one earned run. Blake Sielger registered the one-out victory while Brooks Calvo tossed the final two frames for the save.
