DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team lost an 84-64 decision to North Georgia Saturday afternoon.
The Pacers are now 5-16 on the season and 2-13 in league play. The Nighthawks are now 18-3 overall and 13-2 against conference foes.
Head coach
Mark Miller's team was guided by
Kyrie' Chandler's game-high 24 points. She drained seven-of-10 from the floor, including four-of-six from downtown. Chandler also hit all six charity tosses.
Marissa Bruce and
Phenicia Howard each contributed nine markers while
Melyk Taouil totaled six points.
Lonesha Lee chipped in five points.
Star Toomey was strong on the glass, snagging a team-best seven rebounds while
Sade Johnson accounted for six. The dyad each blocked two shots in the contest while Bruce had two steals.
USC Aiken jumped on top with a three-ball from Howard off a pass from Johnson. The two squads battled back-and-forth in the early going. Trailing 11-8, Bruce hit back-to-back shots for a 12-11 advantage. UNG managed to maintain a 22-16 lead after the first quarter, but the Pacers bounced back.
Down by eight, a lay-up by Toomey sliced the deficit to just three at the 6:29 mark of the second quarter. A pair of Howard charity tosses moments later pulled the team within two at 29-27. Miller's squad made it a one-point contest on a pair of occasions, including a three-pointer by Chandler with 10 ticks remaining. However, the team would go into the break trailing 42-38.
The Nighthawks managed to outscore USC Aiken by nine in the third quarter and seven more in the fourth for the final tally.
For the game, USC Aiken hit 22-of-65 from the floor (33.8 percent), including seven-of-23 from the floor (30.4 percent). The squad buried 13-of-15 from the charity stripe (86.7 percent).
