Pacers Claim Victory Over Patriots

AIKEN, S.C. –The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team picked up a 4-1 victory over Francis Marion Saturday afternoon in the second game of their first conference three-game series.

The Pacers are now 8-4 overall and 2-0 in league play.

After a quiet first inning, head coach Kenny Thomas' team went to work. Conner Durden led off the bottom of the second inning with a walk, advancing to second base on a groundout and then to third base on a wild pitch. With two away in the frame, Nile Goings hit a ground ball to second base which was misplayed, resulting in a 1-0 lead as Dudren scored.

Neither team would score again until the fifth inning, which began with a single from Goings. He would later advance to second on a groundout. With two outs, Chandler Rogers singled to left field, plating Goings for a 2-0 advantage.

Mitch Spence was stellar on the mound and did not give up a base knock until the top of the sixth inning. Francis Marion threatened, but Spence worked out of a jam, forcing a fly-ball to Jose Bonilla, ending the inning.

The Pacers would tack on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth when Durden launched a two-run home run over the right field fence for the 4-0 margin.

Francis Marion scored one run in the top of the seventh but Spence would get out of the inning by way of strikeout.

The Patriots would threaten again in the eighth by loading the bases with two outs. However, Jamie Morlan forced a flyout to center field to end the potential rally.

Zach Lang entered from the bullpen to start the ninth inning. After striking out the first batter, he forced a groundout to third base and registered another strikeout to end the game.

For the contest, Durden posted two hits and had two RBI. Rogers and Philip Watcher would also register two hits. Rogers drove in a run.

Spence worked seven strong innings, only allowing three hits and striking out 10. Morlan would strike out two in one inning of work while Lang tallied the save after a scoreless ninth.

The Pacers return to action tomorrow when they host Francis Marion in the series finale starting at 12 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at PacerSports.com.
