AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team split a doubleheader Sunday afternoon, falling 6-5 in the first game before winning the nightcap 10-6.
The Pacers are now 5-7 on the season.
After falling behind 4-0 in the opener, head coach
Jerry Snyder's team fought back, tying the contest in the bottom of the sixth.
Hanna Hyder led things off in the fifth with a single and moved to second on
Brielle Jungblut's infield single. Each moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt from
Lyndie Dorgan.
Courtney Strauss ripped a double down the line, scoring both runners.
Kristan Lowery's single knocked home Strauss, making it 4-3 in the fifth. With two down in the sixth,
Sydney Kate Murphy blasted a double to center field before hustling to third on a wild pitch. Hyder singled home Murphy, knotting the contest at 4-4.
In the seventh, a pair of miscues allowed the visitors to take a 6-4 lead. USC Aiken nearly battled back in the bottom of the frame. Strauss roped a one-out triple to center field. With two down,
Hannah Price reached on an error, allowing Strauss to score. However, a strikeout ended the game.
USC Aiken fell behind 2-0 in the first inning of game two, but quickly jumped on top with three of their own. Strauss doubled and scored on Price's single. With two away, Murphy launched a two-run homer over the wall for a 3-2 edge.
The visitors regained the lead in the fourth with two runs, but quickly surrendered the advantage.
Janee McCarthy singled with one down in the fourth. She was erased on a fielder's choice from Dorgan, but Dorgan quickly swiped second base. Strauss drew a walk, and a single to center field from
Katelyn Powell provided the Pacers with a run. Price singled home Strauss for a one-run margin.
USC Aiken tacked onto the lead in the fifth. Strauss roped a three-run double to the gap, plating
Maci Hutto, McCarthy and Dorgan, who had all reached with one away. Later,
Chandler Terrapin garnered a double, scoring Powell and Price for a 10-4 lead.
The home squad would go on to win the game 10-6.
