USC Aiken Splits With Lees-McRae

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team split a doubleheader Sunday afternoon, falling 6-5 in the first game before winning the nightcap 10-6.

The Pacers are now 5-7 on the season.

After falling behind 4-0 in the opener, head coach Jerry Snyder's team fought back, tying the contest in the bottom of the sixth. Hanna Hyder led things off in the fifth with a single and moved to second on Brielle Jungblut's infield single. Each moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt from Lyndie Dorgan

Courtney Strauss ripped a double down the line, scoring both runners. Kristan Lowery's single knocked home Strauss, making it 4-3 in the fifth. With two down in the sixth, Sydney Kate Murphy blasted a double to center field before hustling to third on a wild pitch. Hyder singled home Murphy, knotting the contest at 4-4.

In the seventh, a pair of miscues allowed the visitors to take a 6-4 lead. USC Aiken nearly battled back in the bottom of the frame. Strauss roped a one-out triple to center field. With two down, Hannah Price reached on an error, allowing Strauss to score. However, a strikeout ended the game.

USC Aiken fell behind 2-0 in the first inning of game two, but quickly jumped on top with three of their own. Strauss doubled and scored on Price's single. With two away, Murphy launched a two-run homer over the wall for a 3-2 edge.

The visitors regained the lead in the fourth with two runs, but quickly surrendered the advantage. Janee McCarthy singled with one down in the fourth. She was erased on a fielder's choice from Dorgan, but Dorgan quickly swiped second base. Strauss drew a walk, and a single to center field from Katelyn Powell provided the Pacers with a run. Price singled home Strauss for a one-run margin.

USC Aiken tacked onto the lead in the fifth. Strauss roped a three-run double to the gap, plating Maci Hutto, McCarthy and Dorgan, who had all reached with one away. Later, Chandler Terrapin garnered a double, scoring Powell and Price for a 10-4 lead.

The home squad would go on to win the game 10-6.

The Pacers return to action Tuesday when they play at Erskine. First pitch is slated for 1p.m. Live stats will be available at PacerSports.com.
