DUE WEST, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team split a pair of games at Erskine Tuesday afternoon, falling 7-5 before winning 4-3 in the nightcap.
The Pacers are now 6-8 on the season.
In the opener,
Hanna Hyder registered two hits and two RBI while
Courtney Strauss blasted her first career round-tripper, which was of the two-run variety.
Sydney Kate Murphy also launched a solo homer while
Brielle Jungblut and
Jessica Stanley each scored runs.
The Pacers trailed 1-0 heading into the third, but plated four runs in the stanza. After Jungblut had a lead-off single, Strauss plated both on a shot over the left field fence. After Stanley reached on an error and Murphy was hit by a pitch, Hyder doubled both runners home for a 4-1 edge.
Murphy led off the fifth with a solo blast to left for a 5-1 advantage. The Flying Fleet would strike for six runs in the bottom of the sixth and hang on for the 7-5 win.
In the nightcap, head coach
Jerry Snyder's squad plated a run in the second and third frames. Murphy led off the scoring with another round-tripper. This time, it cleared the left center field wall. In the third, Strauss singled and was pushed to second on a sacrifice bunt by Stanley.
Hannah Price belted a single to left for a 2-0 advantage.
Erskine pushed across three runs in the fifth, but USC Aiken would not be denied the win. In the top of the sixth, Murphy doubled.
Leah Boghosian came in as a pinch runner and swiftly moved to third on an infield single by
Sarah Sams. Jungblut smacked a single to center field, knotting the contest at 3-3.
In the seventh, Stanley reached on an error by the pitcher and hustled to second on a single by Price.
Chandler Terrapin singled to center field, loading the bags. Murphy brought home what turned out to be the game-winning run with a line drive to center field.
Price tossed a complete game in the circle, picking up the win. She struck out nine to pick up her first win of the season.
In the nightcap, Murphy and Price each had three hits. Jungblut and Sams registered two base knocks apiece.
