USC Aiken Falls To Newberry

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team lost a pair of tight games to Newberry Thursday afternoon by scores of 3-1 and 2-1.

The Pacers are now 4-6 overall.

USC Aiken fell behind the Wolves 3-0 in the opening game but had a chance to tie in the bottom of the seventh. Courtney Strauss looped a pitch into right field, but a diving save prevented it from being at least a double. Hannah Price followed her up with a one-out single.

Leah Boghosian came in as a pinch runner and moved to second when Sydney Kate Murphy blasted the first pitch to right field for a single. Kathleen St. Peter singled to center field, plating Boghosian after an outstanding slide, making it 3-1. However, a tremendous defensive play by the Wolves and a deep fly ball ended the contest.

St. Peter led the way with a pair of hits and one RBI.

In the nightcap, head coach Jerry Snyder's team got on the board in the first inning. Strauss led off the at bat by launching the first offering deep into the left side of the infield. She reached safely and moved to second on Katelyn Powell's sacrifice bunt. Price knocked an 0-1 offering into right field, scoring Strauss for the 1-0 edge.

The Pacers left a pair on base in the second inning and the Wolves knotted the contest at 1-1 in the third.

USC Aiken fell behind 2-1 after the visitors scored in the fifth. In the bottom of the stanza, Lyndie Dorgan singled and ended up on second base, but a groundout ended the threat. It marked the last time the home team would get a runner on base.

The Pacers return to action Sunday when they host Lees-McRae at 1 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at PacerSports.com.
