USC Aiken Picks Up Road Win At Clayton State

MORROW, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team posted a 67-58 victory at Clayton State Monday evening in a PBC contest.

The Pacers are now 6-3 overall and 3-1 in league play. The Lakers are 4-3 overall and 1-1 against conference foes.

Head coach Mark Miller's team was paced by Kyrie' Chandler and Kwajelin Farrar as each netted 13 points in the win. Farrar tallied nine boards while Chandler dished out five assists.

Rookie Grace Crawford added 10 points while Sade Johnson totaled eight points and seven rebounds.

Crawford opened the scoring with a pair of free throws at the 8:16 mark of the first quarter for a 2-0 edge. With just under seven minutes to play in the stanza, Farrar buried both charity tosses for a 4-0 advantage. Johnson got into the scoring act with a lay-up. After a basket by the home team, Chandler canned a three-ball off a pass from Johnson for a 9-2 lead.

Kanna Suzuki promptly connected on a shot from distance off a pass from Chandler, giving the visitors a 12-2 margin at the 3:01 mark. Farrar netted two more free throws for a 14-2 score with just 2:21 to go in the frame en route to an 18-10 lead heading into the second quarter.

The Lakers pulled within two at 18-16 just 50 seconds into the second period. However, a quick time-out by USC Aiken thwarted the momentum. Janae' Simpson's lay-up pushed the margin to four, 20-16. Moments later, Chandler's three-point shot off a pass from Madison Williams made it 26-19. The Pacers maintained a six-point lead, 29-23, heading into the second half after Johnson found the bottom of the net on a jumper for the final points of the period.

A steal and a lay-up by Johnson got things going in the third frame. Melyk Taouil extended the margin to double digits with a three-ball from Chandler. On the ensuing possession, Chandler found Crawford for a long-range shot and a 37-23 lead. Star Toomey's bucket off a pass from Simpson pushed the score to 49-32 with 1:54 to play in the third.

The Lakers cut the lead to 10, but Crawford answered with a three-point shot to make it 52-39. However, the home team managed to slice the deficit to one, 59-58, with 1:10 to go. USC Aiken lost the ball, but Taouil was able to register a steal on the ensuing possession. Seconds later, Chandler beat the press and found Farrar for a lay-up with 43 ticks on the clock.

After a missed three-point shot by the Lakers, Chandler was fouled and hit both free throws for a 63-58 edge. Johnson secured a rebound on Clayton State's next possession and hit both charity tosses for a seven-point margin. Williams made a pair of free throws with 22 seconds to play for the final margin.

For the game, USC Aiken hit 22-of-55 from the floor (40.0 percent) while Clayton State connected on 24-of-69 (34.8 percent). The Pacers hit nine-of-19 from downtown (47.4 percent) and made 14-of-18 from the charity stripe (77.8 percent). Miller's team held a 45-36 edge on the glass. USC Aiken never trailed in the game.

The Pacers return to action Wednesday when they play at Georgia College at 3:30 p.m.
