AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team posted an 81-60 victory over Paine Tuesday evening in a non-conference contest.
The Pacers are now 3-1 on the year while the Lions are 0-4.
Head coach
Mark Miller's team was led by
Kyrie' Chandler's game-high 19 points.
Kwajelin Farrar added 16 points and a team-best nine rebounds in the victory.
Madeline Sexton and
Melyk Taouil added 12 points apiece in the win.
Sade Johnson contributed six points, four assists and four steals.
Janae' Simpson came off the bench to account for four points while
Grace Crawford shared game-high accolades with four assists.
USC Aiken opened the contest on a 7-0 spurt over the first 2:02. Johnson got things going with a three-ball. She followed it with a lay-up before Farrar converted a jumper. The Pacers led by as many as 11 when Sexton buried a three-pointer off a pass from Taouil for a 13-2 edge.
The Lions got back into the contest, slicing the margin to six at the end of the first quarter (20-14). Paine got within one at 20-19 before Miller's team reeled off six straight points thanks in part to Taouil, Chandler and Sexton.
USC Aiken extended the lead to 11 at 36-25 on a three-pointer from Chandler off a pass from Crawford. Leading 39-30 just before halftime, Crawford found Farrar for a lay-up at the buzzer for a 41-30 score at intermission.
Early in the second half, Taouil's jumper pushed the lead to 15 at 48-33. The Pacers continued their dominance throughout the third period.
Star Toomey's lay-up off a pass from
Alex Canady with 2:45 to go in the third pushed the lead to 20 at 59-39.
Paine cut the deficit to 10 with 9:26 to play, but Miller's squad scored five straight off of points from Johnson and three from Farrar. Leading 64-51, USC Aiken embarked on an 8-0 spurt to secure the win.
The lead was pushed to 23 after
Va Draunidalo converted a pair of free throws with 1:36 to play.
Madison Williams knotted the biggest lead of the game on a three-pointer with 39 seconds to go off a pass from
Phenicia Howard.
For the game, USC Aiken converted 17 turnovers into 25 points. The Pacers also outscored the visitors 23-4 in fast-break opportunities. Miller's team led from start to finish. The squad also hit 11-of-23 from the three-point stripe (47.1 percent) and converted 31-of-56 from the floor (55.4 percent).
