AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team posted a 3-0 sweep over Augusta, clinching the PBC regular-season championship Friday evening.
The Pacers are now 20-3 overall and 10-1 in league play. The Jaguars are now 21-6 overall and 7-4 against conference foes.
Christine Carroll and
Alie Smith led the way, sharing match-high honors with 13 kills apiece.
Kayla Duggan accounted for a. double-double with 10 kills and 13 digs.
Ali Kirk dished out a match-best 25 assists while adding a pair of blocks and two kills.
Alli Bell registered 16 assists and seven digs.
Defensively,
Rebecca Martinez posted a match-best 29 digs while chipping in four assists.
Vannah Strozier accounted for 14 digs.
At the net, Carroll stuffed four shots while
Brittani Vialdores tallied three blocks to go along with her eight kills and .538 hitting percentage.
Trailing 2-1 in the first set, Duggan got things going with a thunderous kill.
Anita Cookey-Gam slammed home a kill for a 3-2 lead. After an error by the visitors, Carroll was in on the next four points, with three coming via kills. She and Kirk combined for a block.
The Jaguars tied it at 13-13, but head coach
Glenn Cox's team reeled off seven of the next eight points for a 20-15 edge. The last point in the run came via the swing from
Alie Smith. After a point by Augusta, Vialdores was emphatic with back-to-back kills, sparking the team to a 25-16 win.
Down 5-1 in the second stanza, Carroll started a run with a kill. Smith added back-to-back kills, Kirk stuffed an attempt by herself. Augusta led 9-6, but the Pacers embarked on a 5-0 spurt.
The tightly contested second set stood at 17-16 in favor of the home team, but Carroll and Smith helped push the lead to 21-16. USC Aiken traded points en route to the 25-22 victory, with the last coming from Carroll.
Tied at 17-17, Carroll hammered home a kill and a miscue by the Jaguars made it 19-18. Vialdores blocked an attempt. Duggan and Smith posted kills. After an error made it 23-18, Vialdores found the court again. An error allowed USC Aiken to grab the 25-18 victory.
The Pacers return to action tomorrow for Senior Day against Georgia College. The match is slated for 2 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at PacerSports.com.
