AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team posted a 69-63 victory over North Greenville Saturday afternoon in a non-conference contest.
The Pacers are now 2-1 on the season. The Crusaders are now 1-3 on the season.
Head coach
Mark Miller's team was led by
Kwajelin Farrar's double-double effort. She posted 21 points and a game-high 13 rebounds to go along with two blocks. Kyrie' Chander netted double figures, pouring in 14 points.
Sade Johnson added seven points, five assists and three steals.
Melyk Taouil tied Johnson with a game-best five assists.
Off the bench,
Star Toomey swatted a game-high three shots.
USC Aiken trailed by seven with 8:02 left in the half, but quickly tied the contest at 26-26 when Chandler buried a jumper. Farrar added a lay-up and
Grace Crawford drained a three-ball to make it 31-26 with 4:50 to play before halftime. The Pacers maintained a 40-36 lead at the break.
Miller's team pushed the margin to seven on a three-ball from
Melyk Taouil to start the third quarter. With neither squad scoring much in the period, USC Aiken held a 49-43 lead heading into the fourth stanza.
The Pacers pushed the lead to 10 when
Alex Canady hit a jumper on the break. On the ensuing possession, Canady drilled a three-pointer off a pass from Taouil to make it 56-43.
In the fourth, NGU made it close, but strong defense and solid foul shooting near the end of the game sealed the victory for the Pacers.
For the game, USC Aiken hit 21-of-54 from the floor (38.9 percent) compared to 23-of-67 (34.3 percent) for the visitors. Miller's team held a 51-31 advantage on the glass. The team got to the charity stripe 34 times and calmly connected on 22 attempts (64.7 percent).
