Total Team Effort Pushes Pacers Past Bobcats

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team earned a 3-1 victory at Georgia College Friday evening in a road league match-up.

The Pacers are now 14-2 overall and 4-0 in league action. The Bobcats fall to 9-8 overall and 2-3 against conference competition.

Alie Smith led the way with a double-double effort. She accounted for 16 kills and a career-high 20 digs and now has over 500 kills and digs in her one-plus seasons at USC Aiken. Smith also chimed in with five blocks.

Christine Carroll slammed home 13 kills to go along with five blocks. Kayla Duggan reached double figures with 11 kills while Brittani Vialdores narrowly missed a double-double with nine kills and a career-high nine blocks, which is the second most in the PBC this season.

Ali Kirk dished out 29 assists while Alli Bell chipped in 17. The dyad had six digs apiece.

Defensively, Rebecca Martinez posted a match-high 35 digs, which marked the fifth-most digs in a four-set match in school history. Her effort pushed Martinez into 18th place on the PBC career chart. Vannah Strozier was strong on the back line, tallying 11 digs.

USC Aiken fell behind 16-14 in the first set, but a kill from Carroll and a block from Smith and Vialdores knotted the frame. Carroll's ace gave the visitors a 17-16 edge. The squad went back-and-forth until Carroll and Duggan found the court in back-to-back plays for the 26-24 win.

After dropping the second set 25-23, head coach Glenn Cox's team jumped out to a 5-1 edge in the third frame and never looked back. Leading 14-11, Smith slammed home a kill. Smith and Vialdores blocked an attempt before Vialdores pounded home a pass from Kirk. Smith's kill pushed the score to 18-11 en route to the 25-17 victory.

The Pacers trailed in the early going of the fourth frame, but the squad rallied tying it at 10-10 on a kill from Carroll. The point sparked a 5-0 run for a 14-10 advantage. However, Georgia College rattled off six of the next seven points for a lead.

Smith's kill made it 24-21, but the Bobcats managed to score the next four points for a 25-24 advantage. Smith took a pass from Kirk to even the score. After a miscue by the home team, Bell found Smith for the match-winner at 27-25.
