AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team posted a 3-0 win against UNC Pembroke Saturday afternoon.
The Pacers are now 19-3 on the year and 9-1 in league play. The Braves are now 9-20 overall and 0-11 against conference foes.
Head coach
Glenn Cox's team was paced by
Christine Carroll's match-high 13 kills. She hit .429 and was in on three blocks.
Alie Smith accounted for 12 kills and added eight digs.
Brittani Vialdores chipped in six kills in the win.
Ali Kirk dished out a match-high 18 assists while
Alli Bell amassed 13 assists.
Defensively,
Rebecca Martinez totaled a match-best 20 digs while
Vannah Strozier tallied 11.
Tied at 9-9 in the first set, USC Aiken broke it open with six of the next seven points. Martinez had an ace as did
Kayla Duggan in the spurt. Up 15-12, the Pacers reeled off eight consecutive points. The rally started with a kill from Duggan. Carroll and Kirk had a block while Carroll slammed home two kills in the run as the home team posted a 25-15 win.
UNC Pembroke held a 15-14 edge before a miscue gave the Pacers a side-out. Carroll added two kills and Smith found the court to make it 18-15. The Braves made it 24-21 moments later, but VIaldores hammered home a pass from Bell for the set winner.
The third frame was close throughout, but a pair of mistakes by the Braves made it 23-18. Carroll and Spurlin were in on a block to make it 24-18. Leading by five, Spurlin slammed home the final point in the win.
