USC Aiken Downs Flagler, 3-1

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team posted a 3-1 win over Flagler Friday evening in a league contest.

The Pacers are now 18-3 overall and 8-1 in league play. The Saints fall to 10-13 on the year and 4-5 against conference foes.

Head coach Glenn Cox's team was led by Alie Smith's match-high 16 kills. She added 10 digs for a double-double. Kayla Duggan garnered a double-double with 12 kills and 18 digs. Christine Carroll hit double figures with 11 kills. She also added three blocks. Anita Cookey-Gam narrowly missed out on double figures for the fourth straight match, totaling nine.

Ali Kirk dished out a team-best 26 assists while Alli Bell had 15 assists to go along with 13 digs.

Defensively, Rebecca Martinez led the way with a match-best 34 digs. She also posted 10 assists for a double-double. The 34 digs are the sixth most in school history in a four-set match.

At the net, Brittani Vialdores led the way with four total blocks, including a momentum-building solo stuff in the fourth set.

After dropping the first set, USC Aiken went on a 5-1 spurt near the start of the second stanza, sparked by a kill from Duggan and Smith. Carroll got into the act as well. Leading 8-6, an error by the visitors sent the Pacers on another run with seven consecutive points. During the run, Smith had a pair of kills and Duggan added one en route to the 25-16 victory.

The fourth set was tight throughout. The frame was tied at 19, but Cox's squad reeled off back-to-back points thanks to Carroll. Leading 22-21, Smith found the court on back-to-back passes before Vialdores rattled the ball home for the final point.

USC Aiken jumped in front of the fourth stanza with five straight points to start things off and never looked back. Carroll started the set with a block. Duggan and Cookey-Gam added points during the run. Leading 15-12, an error sparked a 4-0 run. Duggan, Carroll and Smith tallied kills, making it 19-12. Up 20-15, a miscue by Flagler and an ace from Bell made it 22-15. Vialdores stuffed an attempt before back-to-back errors made it a final score of 25-15.
