GREENWOOD, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team rolled to a 3-0 victory at Lander Tuesday evening.
The Pacers are now 17-3 on the season, including 7-1 in league action. The Bearcats fall to 19-6 overall and 5-4 against conference foes.
Christine Carroll led the way with 14 kills while hitting .355.
Anita Cookey-Gam recorded double-digit kills with 11 while
Kayla Duggan totaled a double-double with 10 kills and 14 digs.
Ali Kirk posted 27 assists and added eight digs in the victory.
Alli Bell garnered a double-double with 14 assists and 11 digs.
Defensively,
Rebecca Martinez tallied a match-high 26 digs.
Brittani Vialdores added four blocks while Duggan chimed in with three.
Head coach
Glenn Cox's team jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first set and maintained controlled throughout. The Bearcats pulled within two at 23-21, but Cookey-Gam slammed home back-to-back kills for the 25-23 win.
USC Aiken fell behind in the second frame but went on a roll to take an 11-7 advantage on a block from Duggan and Vialdores. Trailing 23-21, Kirk fooled the defense for a kill. Two miscues by the Bearcats pushed the visitors to a 24-23 advantage. Tied at 25-25, Kirk and Duggan found the court for the 27-25 win.
Down 6-2 in the third set, Carroll's serving led the way to a 9-6 advantage. During the spurt, Cookey-Gam had three kills. The Pacers extended the margin to seven at 19-12 on an error by the home team, but saw its lead shrink. However, Carroll and Duggan blocked an attempt as did Smith and Vialdores. Leading 24-21, Carroll sliced the defense for the final point.
