AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team posted a 3-0 victory over visiting UNC Pembroke while
Rebecca Martinez shattered a school record in the team's PBC opener Tuesday evening.
The Pacers improve to 9-2 overall and 1-0 in league play while the Braves fall to 2-9 overall and 0-3 against conference competition.
Head coach
Glenn Cox's team was led by
Julia Forster's match-high nine kills.
Avery Macklin and
Alie Smith notched seven kills apiece while
Alicia Hines and
Emily Teelon garnered five kills apiece.
Kelsey Spurlin totaled three kills while hitting .600.
Natalie Perrault accounted for two kills.
Christine Carroll,
Kayla Duggan and
Okwunne Ogbogu notched a kill each.
Teelon dished out a match-best 22 assists to go along with three digs, a block and an ace.
Highlighting the night was sophomore Martinez's school-record setting 33 digs for a three-set match. It shattered the previous mark of 28 set by
Danielle Mercer. Martinez had multiple digs in several rallies, including a four-dig performance in one rally.
After the visitors scored the first point of the match, Macklin's kill evened the score at 1-1. It started a 6-0 run by the home team. During the spurt, Smith sliced the defense with two kills while Forster garnered a kill.
Leading 15-6, Smith notched a kill to make it a 10-point contest. Teelon had an ace prior to Smith getting another kill for an 18-6 advantage en route to the 25-11 win.
Cox's team reeled off five straight points to start the second stanza. Teelon, Carroll and Macklin started it off with kills before Carroll and Smith had a block. With an 11-5 advantage, USC Aiken embarked on a 6-0 run that featured kills from Hines, Teelon and Smith.
After UNC Pembroke rattled off back-to-back points to make it 22-11, the Pacers scored three of the next four for a 25-12 win.
Trailing 5-3 in the third set, a service error by the visitors made it 5-4. That sparked a 5-0 run by USC Aiken for an 8-5 advantage. Holding a 10-8 advantage, Cox's team went on a 5-0 run that was guided by Hines' two kills and Smith's two points.
The Braves pulled within five at 20-15, but Hines scored the next two points as the home team put the visitors away.
