ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team reeled off a 3-1 win at Flagler Saturday afternoon in a Peach Belt Conference contest.
The Pacers are now 10-2 on the season and 2-0 in league play. The Saints fall to 5-3 on the year and 0-1 against conference competition.
Head coach
Glenn Cox's team was led by
Julia Forster's match-high 14 kills. She also contributed seven digs to the victory.
Avery Macklin reached double figures with 11 kills and hit an astounding .526 as she had just one error in 19 attacks. Macklin was also in on a pair of blocks.
Rookie
Alie Smith continued her solid play with 10 kills and 13 digs for a double-double.
Christine Carroll totaled nine kills while
Alicia Hines garnered eight.
Running the show was
Emily Teelon, who distributed a match-best 45 assists to go along with six digs, four kills and four aces.
Defensively,
Rebecca Martinez led the charge with a match-high 21 digs.
In the opening frame, USC Aiken jumped out to a 3-0 lead on three straight errors by the home team. Down 6-5,
Alicia Hines slammed home a pass from Teelon to even the contest and starting a 5-0 spurt. Forster had two kills, Teelon had one and Perrault served up an ace.
Leading 20-15, Forster and Hines tallied kills while Perrault served up an ace en route to the 25-18 win.
USC Aiken jumped out to a 10-8 lead in the second before Hines and Smith powered home kills prior to taking a 14-8 advantage. The Pacers embarked on a 5-0 run moments later for a 19-10 edge.
Although the Saints had a pair of rallies to pull close, an attack error by the home team gave USC Aiken the win, 25-17.
The Pacers dropped the third frame in extra points, but bounced back in the fourth stanza. Cox's team held a 10-5 margin before Flagler took a 20-19 lead. Carroll evened the set at 20-20 before Teelon found a hole in the defense on her serve. Carroll and Macklin combined for a block, giving the team a 22-21 advantage.
Holding a one-point lead, 23-22, Macklin and Forster netted back-to-back kills for the three-point win.
