PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team competed in its toughest opening day in the
Glenn Cox era and came up just short in a pair of matches to West Florida and nationally-ranked Wheeling Jesuit.
The Pacers are now 0-2 on the young season.
USC Aiken put up its best work in the nightcap against No. 11 Wheeling Jesuit.
Christine Carroll led the way with a team-high 14 kills while hitting .250. She also garnered three blocks in the match. Rookie
Alie Smith tallied a double-double with 11 kills and 14 digs while
Julia Forster notched 11 kills.
Alicia Hines added seven kills while hitting .353 and
Kelsey Spurlin chipped in six kills in the loss.
Emily Teelon garnered a double-double with 45 assists and 16 digs. Defensively, Spurlin had three block assists while
Rebecca Martinez accounted for a team-high 18 digs.
In the opener, USC Aiken battled West Florida, but the Pacers came up short in the 3-0 loss.
Offensively, Forster led the way with 11 kills while rookie Smith was close to a double-double effort with eight kills and eight digs. Hines hit .364, slamming home five kills on 11 attempts while Carroll also added five kills.
Teelon dished out 29 of the team's 31 assists.
Defensively, Hines led the way with four block assists while Smith and Teelon notched two block assists apiece. Martinez guided the squad with 11 digs. Forster added eight while Teelon and
Natalie Perrault totaled six and four, respectively.
The Pacers return to action tomorrow for the final day of the tournament. The team takes on Southern Indiana at 2 p.m., before wrapping up the tournament against North Alabama at 6 p.m. Live stats will be available for both contests. Video will be available in the nightcap. Both contests are EST.
