Pacers Sweep Final Day Of West Florida Tournament

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team picked up a pair of victories Saturday on the final day of the West Florida Tournament.

The Pacers are now 2-2 on the young season after beating Southern Indiana and North Alabama.

In the opener against SIU, head coach Glenn Cox's team got off to a shaky start, but countered quickly.

After trailing 11-7, USC Aiken called a time-out. However, the squad remained down 14-10 before an attack error gave the Pacers momentum. Alie Smith had a kill and another error by the home team made it 14-13. Down by two, Christine Carroll sparked a 4-0 run. Carroll and Julia Forster had back-to-back kills. Two attack errors made it 17-15.

Tied at 24-24, a bad set by the Screaming Eagles made it a one-point lead for USC Aiken. Carroll and Smith combined for a block for the 26-24 win in the first set.

The Pacers jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the second frame behind a pair of kills from Forster and one from Carroll. The team doubled up its counterpart at 10-5 when Teelon took a pass from Smith and slammed it home.

USC Aiken increased its lead to 17-7 after six straight points. The run was sparked by Forster, who had three kills and a block during the spurt. Cox's team was not challenged the rest of the second set.

The third stanza was never in doubt as USC Aiken held a 10-3 lead. The team went on to claim the sweep by a 25-10 count.

For the match, Carroll, Forster and Smith had 12 kills apiece. Teelon tallied 36 assists while Rebecca Martinez was outstanding with 18 digs.

Alicia Hines continued her solid play with five kills against one error while Smith narrowly missed a double-double with nine digs. Natalie Perrault also accounted for nine digs in the win.

At the net, Carroll led the way with three blocks while Forster added two.

In the nightcap against North Alabama, the Pacers needed to overcome a 1-0 deficit en route to a 3-2 victory.

Smith continued her solid tournament with an 18-kill, 13-dig performance. She contributed a pair of aces and blocks in the win. Forster had a double-double with 17 kills and 14 digs. Hines was outstanding with 12 kills while hitting .478. She also added three blocks. Carroll added 10 kills and four blocks.

Teelon dished out 51 assists to go along with 10 digs for a double-double. For good measure, she added five kills.

Defensively, Avery Macklin stuffed five shots at the net. On the back row, Martinez was sensational with a match-best 31 digs.

After dropping the opening set, USC Aiken found itself leading 19-17. Then, Smith hammered home back-to-back kills before Perrault notched back-to-back aces for a 23-17 lead. A point by the designated home team did not derail Cox's squad as Hines served up back-to-back kills for the 25-18 win.

The Pacers raced out to an early lead in the third set and held on for a 25-19 victory on a kill from Carroll.

USC Aiken dropped the fourth set and found itself down in the fifth frame, but quickly forged ahead. Trailing 10-7, UNA committed four straight errors and Forster added a kill for a 12-10 lead.

Holding a 12-11 advantage, Forster found the court and an error made it 14-11.

UNA scored two points before Cox called a time-out for a quick pep talk. After the break in action, Forster ended the match off a pass from Martinez.

In the tournament, Teelon moved into fourth place on the USC Aiken career list for assists with 2,637 in a mere 71 matches. Martinez's 31 digs marked a career high for the second-year standout.

The Pacers return to action Friday when they host the USC Aiken Invitational. The squad hosts Mount Olive at 3 p.m., and Barton at 7 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at PacerSports.com.
