AIKEN, S.C. – Behind two goals from senior
Sarah Moore, the University of South Carolina Aiken women's team rolled to a 4-1 victory over Mars Hill in the season-opening match for both teams.
The Pacers are now 1-0 on the season while the Lions drop to 0-1.
After a few good looks at the frame in the early going, senior
Tori Caldwell rocketed home the first goal of the season for a 1-0 edge at the 16:16 mark. On the play, Moore flicked the ball to Caldwell along the left side of the pitch. She corralled it before promptly blasting the ball to the far post for the goal.
With less than three minutes to play in the first half, the visitors managed to knot the match at 1-1.
Head coach
Hilary George's team forced the issue in the early going of the second period. By pushing forward, USC Aiken kept MHC guessing on defense. In the 52
nd minute of play,
Casey Rish played the ball toward the frame. Moore took control of it and registered what turned out to be the game-winning goal.
At the 52:50 mark, Moore struck again. Caldwell dribbled on the left side of the pitch and made a sensational pass to Moore, who quickly found the back of the net for her fifth point of the season.
In the 58
th minute of play, newcomer
Gressa Olson played the ball toward the frame.
Catherine McHale recovered it before rocketing home the final tally of the night.
In goal, senior
Karin Cadwalader played all 90 minutes. She stopped two shots en route to earning the victory.
For the match, USC Aiken outshot the visitors 21-4. George's team tallied seven corner kicks to just a pair by the Lions.
The four goals marked the most in a season-opening match for USC Aiken since a 4-0 win over Brewton Parker on Aug. 29, 2007.
