Parreira Sets PBC Record As Offensive Explosion Leads Pacers Past Falcons

MONTEVALLO, Ala.Brian Parreira established a school and PBC record as the No. 22 University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team registered a 22-5 victory at Montevallo Friday night in the series opener.

Brian Parreira's six runs scored marked a school record and his name now tops the league record for runs scored in a conference game. The six runs scored also tied the overall league record for runs scored in a contest.

The Pacers are now 32-11 on the season and 15-7 in league play.

After spotting the Falcons two runs in the bottom of the first, head coach Kenny Thomas' team gained a 3-2 lead in the top of the second frame. Parreira led the stanza off with a walk and managed to take his time going around the bases when Zach Moon launched a two-run shot. With two down, Tyler Ammerman ripped a double to right center field. He raced home on Jose Bonilla's single for a one-run edge.

With Joseph Benitez on the mound, the one-run lead was more than enough for the visitors.

In the third inning, Nile Goings walked and moved to third on Parreira's double. He raced home on a Daulton Weeks groundout. Skylar Mercado's single pushed the margin to three at 5-2.

USC Aiken broke open the game in the fourth. Bonilla singled and moved to second on Luke Westerberg's base knock. A fly ball allowed Bonilla to scamper to third base. After Goings reached on a fielder's choice to load the bags, Parreira's single plated two runs. Moon followed him up with an RBI single before Weeks blasted a three-run shot for an 11-2 lead.

The Pacers increased their lead to double digits with a run in the sixth. Ammerman's base hit scored Parreira, who singled earlier in the inning.

The offensive onslaught continued in the next frame. Mitchell Price was hit by a pitch and hustled to third base on Goings' double to left field. Parreira's single knocked both players in.

Moon was hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second. A wild pitch allowed both runners to move up 90 feet. They promptly came home on a single by Weeks. Three batters later, Bonilla struck out, but reached first on a throwing error. It allowed Weeks to cross home for a 17-2 score.

Westerberg doubled home Bonilla before Price belted an opposite field homer for the 20-2 score.

In the eighth, Conner Durden launched a pinch hit two-run homer for a 22-2 lead. Parreira crossed home plate for the sixth time, establishing a school and PBC record. The previous school mark of most runs scored in a game was five by Ashley Morgan against Taylor on March 28, 2002.

The 22 runs scored by USC Aiken marked the most by the team since a 24-6 win over UNC Pembroke on Apr. 3, 2015.

For the game, Benitez worked seven innings. He struck out seven batters and gave up two runs on six hits. Benitez is now 9-2 on the season. Blake Cantrell worked the final two innings. He struck out a pair of Falcons.

Parreira led the way with four hits and had a chance to tie the school record for hits in the game in the ninth inning. However, he took a 3-1 pitch low and away for a walk. Bonilla, Westerberg, Moon, Weeks, Mercado and Ammerman had two hits apiece. Weeks led everyone with a season-best six RBI. In addition to Parreira's six runs scored, Goings and Moon each scored three times. Bonilla, Westerberg, Price and Weeks crossed home twice apiece.

The Pacers return to action tomorrow for the middle game of the series at 4 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at PacerSports.com.
