MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The No. 22 University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team registered a 9-7 victory at Montevallo Saturday afternoon.
The Pacers are now 33-11 on the year, including 16-7 in league play.
USC Aiken bounced back in the second frame.
Nile Goings reached on an error and was able to trot home when
Brian Parreira rocketed a two-run shot over the right field wall. With one away,
Daulton Weeks and
Skylar Mercado drew back-to-back walks. After a line-out,
Jose Bonilla singled up the middle, plating Weeks to make it 4-3.
Head coach
Kenny Thomas' team knotted the game in the fourth inning.
Zach Moon launched a solo homer to lead off the frame, making it 4-4.
With the score still deadlocked in the sixth, Weeks led off with a double to right field. He moved to third on a wild pitch. After Mercado earned a base-on-balls,
Tyler Ammerman lifted a sacrifice fly, plating Weeks. Two batters later,
Luke Westerberg singled home Mercado for a 6-4 edge.
Zach Moon walked to lead off the eighth and Weeks followed suit, putting runners on first and second. Mercado laid down a sacrifice bunt, pushing both runners up 90 feet. Ammerman quickly gave USC Aiken even more breathing room with a single up the middle, scoring two.
The Falcons battled back and pulled within one at 8-7 thanks in part to a three-run shot in the bottom of the inning.
Mitchell Price walked to lead off the ninth. With one down, he moved to third on a failed pickoff attempt and a throwing error. Moon lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, allowing Price to give the visitors a 9-7 margin.
For the game, Bonilla led the team with two hits. Ammerman paced Thomas' squad with three RBI while Moon and Parreira drove in two each. Weeks crossed home three times while Moon did twice.
Nick Yobbi came in and worked the final seven innings for the win. He struck out five in the contest.
