AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team lost a 65-69 overtime contest to Armstrong State Monday evening.
The Pacers are now 13-11 overall including a 9-6 record in Peach Belt action. Pirates improve to 8-15 overall and 4-10 in league play.
For the game,
Kwajelin Farrar accounted for a double-double with 15 points and a career-high 16 rebounds.
Jasmine Coach tallied 11 markers while
Carly Gilreath chipped in nine.
Kate Duff netted eight points while
Rachelle Aupont snagged 10 rebounds.
In a back-and-forth first half, USC Aiken trailed 9-5 before Aupont connected on a jumper in the paint with 4:58 to play in the opening stanza. The Pacers trimmed the deficit to just two points on a pair of occasions, but the Pirates held an 18-11 advantage before
Alexis Ware drained a three-point shot with nine seconds to play in the first half.
Miller's team rattled off five straight points to start the second stanza. Gilreath buried a three-ball off a pass from Waters with 9:13 to go before halftime. After a rebound by Ware, Waters hit a jumper in the lane to make it 19-18.
The Pacers took a three-point edge at 23-20 when Aupont found Waters for another field goal, this time with 4:31 to play. Neither team could muster much offense the rest of the way as USC Aiken held a 23-22 advantage at the break.
The Pirates took a four-point lead with 5:21 to play in the third stanza. With 3:49 to play, Aupont found
Melyk Taouil for a three-point shot. The squads traded another pair of three-point buckets before Duff hit a runner in the lane to push the Pacers in front, 36-35. Armstrong State would end up leading by one heading into the fourth, 39-38.
Trailing 48-42 with 6:21 to play, Farrar took a pass from Duff and converted it for a basket. After a block by Duff, Farrar took another pass from Duff and connected from close range, making it 48-46. A lay-up by Coach off a pass from Aupont knotted the contest at 48-48 with 3:43 left to play in regulation.
Gilreath hit a pair of free throws and Coach hit a jumper, completing a 10-0 run by Miller's team. The Pirates tied the contest with 32 seconds to play in regulation. After a time-out, Farrar missed a jumper, but Coach snagged it. She tried a put-back, but it narrowly missed, sending the teams into overtime.
Armstrong State struck for the first four points of the extra session, but Farrar hit a shot to pull USC Aiken within two, 56-54. However, the Pirates reeled off five straight points to put the game out of reach.
For the game, USC Aiken hit 23-of-73 shots from the floor (31.5 percent), including five-of-23 from downtown (21.7 percent). The squad hit eight-of-14 charity tosses (57.1 percent). Miller's team pulled down 54 rebounds and dished out 18 assists.
