AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team recorded a 92-81 victory over Augusta to clinch a berth in the upcoming PBC Tournament.
The Pacers are now 14-14 on the season.
Leading the way for head coach
Mark Miller's team was
Kwajelin Farrar, who turned in a career-high 26 points to go along with 11 boards for a double-double effort.
Carly Gilreath nearly had a double-double with 18 points and eight assists.
Rachelle Aupont wrapped up her home career with 17 points and 12 boards for a double-double in a mere 27 minutes of action.
Kate Duff tallied 11 points and three assists to go along with three blocks.
Jasmine Coach accounted for four points and five rebounds while
Alexis Ware dished out an assist and registered a rebound in the final home game of her career.
In the first quarter, USC Aiken found itself trailing by 11 before Aupont canned a deep three-ball with one second to play in the stanza to make it a 30-22 contest.
The Pacers were unable to cut into the deficit in the second quarter as the Jaguars managed to lead 54-40 in a high-scoring affair.
After a rousing halftime speech,
Kate Duff trimmed the deficit to eight on a three-ball off a pass from Gilreath with 6:26 to play in the third quarter.
Sade Johnson hit a runner in the lane off a pass from
Melyk Taouil to make it a 57-51 contest.
Gilreath buried a three-pointer to pull the Pacers within three at 59-56 only to have the Jaguars increase their lead to eight, 64-56. However, Gilreath started a 10-0 spurt to end the quarter. Taouil hit a jumper prior to
Emily Waters converting a three-point play, knotting the score at 64-64.
Johnson and Taouil each hit a free throw for the two-point edge heading into the final 10 minutes of action.
Trailing 67-66, Aupont pulled up at the three-point line and took a pass from Gilreath. She squared up and canned one from distance for the go-ahead bucket. Gilreath and Aupont hit back-to-back shots for a 74-67 lead.
Augusta managed to cut the score to four, but the Pacers proved to be too much over the final two minutes of action as the squad continued hitting free throws.
For the game, USC Aiken connected on 31-of-58 from the floor (53.4 percent), including eight-of-14 from downtown (57.1 percent). The squad canned 22-of-28 from the charity stripe. Miller's team dished out 22 assists on the 31 field goals and added seven blocks.
It marked the last home game of the careers for
Rachelle Aupont,
Jasmine Coach,
Kate Duff,
Carly Gilreath and
Alexis Ware.
