USC Aiken Loses Overtime Contest

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team lost an 80-78 decision to Flagler Wednesday evening in a Peach Belt Conference contest.
 
The Pacers are now 13-14 overall and 9-9 in league play. The Saints improve to 4-20 on the year and 2-15 against conference foes.

USC Aiken was paced by Kwajelin Farrar's 12th double-double performance of the year. She accounted for a team-best 19 points and 13 rebounds in 36 minutes of work. Carly Gilreath added 12 points and eight assists in 43 minutes while Jasmine Coach posted 10 points.

Kate Duff contributed nine markers while Rachelle Aupont and Melyk Taouil garnered eight points apiece. Aupont had eight rebounds as well.

Farrar swatted away five shots in the loss.
 
Head coach Mark Miller's team held an 11-9 advantage after a pair of free throws from Alexis Ware. The teams traded the next four points, but a lay-up by the Saints pushed the visitors ahead 15-13 with 2:54 to play. USC Aiken pulled within one on a jumper by Farrar at the 2:23 mark, but Flagler rattled off the final seven points of the stanza for a 23-15 lead heading into the second quarter.
 
The Pacers made it a one-point deficit after scoring the first seven points of the second frame. Kate Duff made a foul shot before Aupont chipped in a pair of charity tosses. Farrar buried back-to-back jumpers, making it a 23-22 contest at the 6:29 mark.
 
The Saints followed with five straight points and held a 43-30 lead before Farrar hit a lay-up in the final 25 seconds of the half to make it a 43-32 game at intermission.

Trailing 59-48 with 1:43 to play in the third, Emily Waters made the second of two free throw attempts. Flagler pushed the lead back to 11 at the 1:09 mark, but a three-ball by Gilreath pulled the Pacers within eight, 60-52, going into the fourth.

Gilreath tied the game at 60-60 with a deep three-point shot off an assist by Farrar at the 5:23 mark. Duff gave the team a three-point edge after burying a shot from downtown with 4:29 to play.

Coach took a pass from Gilreath and found the bottom of the net with 32 ticks left in regulation for a 67-65 advantage. However, the Saints tied it with 15 seconds to play.

Miller's team had two opportunities in the final four seconds, but each shot rimmed out, sending the game into overtime.

USC Aiken rattled off the first five points of overtime for a 72-67 edge. However, the Saints battled back and took a 75-73 lead with 1:35 to play. Battling back and forth over the next minute, Aupont let a three-point shot fly with five seconds remaining that tied the game at 78.

Flagler hit a runner at the buzzer for the two-point victory.

For the game, USC Aiken hit 28-of-63 from the floor (44.4 percent). The squad canned eight-of-17 from downtown (47.1 percent) and made 14-of-18 from the floor (77.8 percent). Miller's team also pulled down 43 rebounds and dished out 21 assists for the game.
