AIKEN, S.C. – The No. 5 University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team registered a 9-4 victory over Shepherd Friday evening in the series-opening game.
The Pacers are now 5-0 on the year while the Rams fall to 1-3.
Head coach
Kenny Thomas' team jumped out to a 5-0 advantage in the first frame. After
Connor Riley shut down the Rams to open the stanza, USC Aiken got on the board quickly.
Jose Bonilla opened the frame with a lead-off single and raced to second on an error by the pitcher.
Luke Westerberg belted a single to left field, plating Bonilla.
Mitchell Price doubled home Westerberg. Then
Zach Moon doubled home Price for a 3-0 edge.
Jonathan Banks earned a base on balls and trotted to second when
Tyler Ammerman drew a walk with one down.
Charles Padilla reached on a fielder's choice, but Moon was thrown out at home plate for the second out.
Skylar Mercado watched four pitches miss the strike zone, plating Banks. Bonilla, batting for the second time in the inning, was hit by a pitch, scoring Ammerman for a 5-0 lead.
The Rams made it a 5-1 game in the fourth, but Thomas' team bounced back with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Westerberg reached on an error and Price's walk put two aboard. Then, Moon launched a three-run homer high over the center field fence for an 8-1 margin.
Shepherd made it 8-2 with a run in the fifth. The Pacers got the run back in the sixth on
Brian Parreira's pinch-hit sacrifice fly, which plated Price. Price tripled to left center field earlier in the inning.
For the game,
Connor Riley worked 4.1 innings after getting the start. He struck out seven batters while giving up two runs on three hits. He looked to go deep into the game, but was taken out after a collision at first base.

Jamie Morlan entered the game for the final six outs, including a strikeout to end the contest.
