AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team dropped a 74-53 contest to Clayton State Saturday afternoon.
The Pacers are now 3-5 on the season, including an 0-2 mark in league play.
The home squad was led by
Kyrie' Chandler and
Emily Waters, who each poured in 11 points.
Shay Fluellyn tallied 10 points in the loss.
Melyk Taouil chipped in seven points.
Star Toomey was held without a basket, but snagged a game-high nine rebounds.
At the break, USC Aiken maintained a 35-34 edge. After trailing by one at the end of the first frame, head coach
Mark Miller's team outscored the visitors 16-14 over the second stanza. The Pacers outscored the Lakers 11-2 in second-chance points in the half thanks in part to 10 offensive rebounds.
However, the visitors pulled away, outscoring USC Aiken 22-5 in the third quarter. Miller's team played tough in the final stanza, but it was not enough in the loss.
For the game, USC Aiken canned 17-of-54 (31.5 percent) from the floor, including seven-of-23 (30.4 percent) from the three-point stripe. The Pacers and Lakers each accounted for 40 rebounds – and both had 14 offensive boards. Miller's team connected 12-of-18 from the charity stripe (66.7 percent).
USC Aiken maintained an 11-5 edge in second-chance points. The game was tied nine times and the lead changed hands nine times.
