ANDERSON, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken men's basketball team posted an 88-85 win at Anderson Tuesday evening in a non-conference showdown.
The Pacers are now 1-1 on the season while the Trojans fall to 1-4.
Head coach
Mark Vanderslice's team was led by
Doniel Dean's 23 points.
Robert Hill and
Markus Terry netted 13 points apiece while
Henry Bolton III chipped in 11 markers.
Tevin Lytes added nine points.
Faison Brock totaled eight points and seven rebounds while
Paris Ballinger contributed eight markers in the win.
Terry also shared team-high accolades with seven rebounds.
For the game, USC Aiken hit 29-of-65 from the floor (44.6 percent), including four-of-15 from downtown (26.7 percent). Vanderslice's group reached the charity stripe 34 times, canning 26 attempts (76.5 percent).
After trailing 8-3 in the early moments, Lytes buried a jumper to make it a three-point contest. Bolton connected on a lay-up and Dean's inside shot gave the Pacers a 9-8 lead. Trailing 15-13, Hill slammed home a pass from Bolton, knotting the score. Hill's lay-up at the 12:29 mark gave the visitors a two-point edge. Ballinger found Hill for another bucket before Ballinger's shot made it 21-15.
Austin Grimes hit a free throw for the 22-15 advantage.
Terry's jumper with 2:33 to go in the opening half pushed the margin to 10 at 37-27. His free throw helped the visitors convert the old-fashioned three-point play. USC Aiken entered the half with a 43-36 lead.
Anderson managed to take a 61-60 lead with 10:21 to play in the game, and pushed its margin to four before Dean's three-point play knotted the contest at 71-71.
Down by six at 78-72, Vanderslice's group finished the game on a 16-7 run. Trailing 85-84 with 49 seconds to go, Dean converted a three-point play for an 87-85 lead with 38 ticks remaining. Hill snagged a rebound and hit a free throw for the final tally.
