AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken men's basketball team posted a 91-76 victory over Chowan Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.
The Pacers are now 2-1 on the season while the Hawks drop to 4-1.
Head coach
Mark Vanderslice's team was led by
Henry Bolton III's game-high 23 points.
Faison Brock added 20 points to go along with nine rebounds, five steals and four assists.
Markus Terry tallied 14 markers while
Doniel Dean chipped in 10 off the bench.
For the game, USC Aiken buried 32-of-71 shots from the floor (45.1 percent). The team canned 10-of-20 from downtown (50 percent) and knocked down 17-of-23 from the charity stripe (73.9 percent).
Vanderslice's team out-rebounded the Hawks 37-34. The team forced 23 turnovers while committing 15. USC Aiken also dished out 14 assists compared to nine by the visitors.
The teams traded baskets in the early going. Holding a 12-10 lead at the 15:50 mark, Bolton III buried a deep ball for a 15-10 edge.
Austin Grimes hit a jumper off a pass from
Doniel Dean. Grimes canned a three-pointer and
Darius Bell followed a shot with a thunderous dunk for a 22-10 advantage.
The Hawks pulled within six at 24-18, but Bolton sliced through the defense for a lay-up. USC Aiken extended the margin to double figures on a three-point shot from the top of the key by
Faison Brock. Vanderslice's squad continued the solid effort, taking a 39-25 lead on a lay-up from
Tevin Lytes off a pass from Ballinger with 19 seconds to go in the opening half. USC Aiken maintained a 39-26 lead at the break.
Vanderslice's team jumped out to an 18-point edge on a dun from Bolton III with 17:44 to go in the game and held a double-digit lead for much of the way. However, the Hawks chipped into the advantage and made it a 53-49 game at the 13:20 mark.
Dean responded by hitting a lay-up. Bolton III made two free throws as did Dean, pushing the margin back to 10. Grimes canned a three-ball at the 11:58 mark, making it 62-49.
USC Aiken did not let the visitors pull within single digits the rest of the way and cruised to the 91-76 victory.
