AUGUSTA, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team posted a 74-59 victory at Paine Sunday afternoon in a non-conference contest.
The Pacers even their record at 2-2 on the season. Paine is now 0-1 on the year.
Head coach
Mark Miller's team was paced by
Kyrie' Chandler and
Emily Waters as each netted 17 points. Waters registered her second career double-double by snagging a game-best 13 rebounds.
Shay Fluellyn chipped in 12 points to go along with six boards. Chandler dished out six assists and registered a game-high four thefts.
Melyk Taouil accounted for seven points while
Celine Vega and
Lonesha Lee tallied six and five, respectively.
USC Aiken canned 27-of-59 shots from the floor (45.8 percent) while holding the Lions to 35.9 percent shooting (23-of-64). The Pacers buried seven-of-17 from downtown (41.2 percent) and netted 13-of-18 from the charity stripe (72.2 percent).
Miller's team controlled the glass, garnering a 44-36 advantage.
USC Aiken jumped out to an 18-10 advantage after the first quarter and increased its lead to 13 at the break after outscoring the home squad 20-13 over the second 10 minutes of action.
The Pacers held a 9-2 lead five minutes into the game after a three-ball from Chandler off a pass from Taouil. Chandler found Lee for a shot from downtown, pushing the margin to eight at 12-4.
Star Toomey's lay-up increased the lead to 10 at 14-4.
USC Aiken maintained a double-digit lead for nearly the entire second period, stretching the margin to 16 after Vega's three-ball, making the score 38-22.
An old-fashioned three-point play gave USC Aiken a 49-29 advantage with 5:42 to play in the third stanza. Although the margin dwindled to 13, Vega's three-pointer pushed it to 16 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Lions pulled within 10 twice in the final period, but that was as close as the home team could get.
