MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team posted a 3-1 win over No. 7 UNC Pembroke Friday afternoon in the PBC Quarterfinals.
The Pacers are now 25-4 on the season.
USC Aiken was led by
Julia Forster's match-best 14 kills.
Alie Smith and
Kelsey Spurlin added 12 kills apiece. Smith's 16 digs gave her a double-double.
Emily Teelon dished out 34 assists and added 13 digs for a double-double.
Rebecca Martinez tallied a match-high 31 digs and chipped in 11 assists for her first career double-double effort. Martinez added a match-best four aces.
Lauren Howard nearly had a double-double with nine digs and eight assists.
Leading 6-5 in the opening frame, Spurlin buried a pass from Teelon for a 7-5 lead. After an error by the Braves,
Christine Carroll stuffed a shot. An error by the visitors and a kill from Forster made it 11-5 in favor for the No. 2 seed.
Ahead 14-9, an error by UNCP and kills from Smith and
Natalie Perrault pushed the margin to 17-9. With the score at 22-14,
Lauren Howard found Carroll for a kill. An ace from Perrault and a thumped ball from Smith off the dish from Howard gave the Pacers the 25-14 win in the opening frame.
A 10-1 run early in the second frame essentially put the set away for USC Aiken. During the spurt, Martinez found the court for an ace. Carroll and Forster added a block. Forster and
Avery Macklin each had kills while Howard served up an ace for a 14-4 advantage.
The Braves embarked on a 7-1 spurt of their own late in the set, but Spurlin tooled the block for a point and a 23-18 advantage. A few plays later, Carroll and Forster teamed up to stuff Tyler Fitzpatrick for the 25-19 victory.
After dropping the third set 25-23, USC Aiken had to fight off the Braves in the fourth stanza. The Pacers trailed 11-10 before Spurlin hammered home a kill. An ace by Martinez gave the designated home team a 12-11 advantage.
USC Aiken reeled off a 4-0 spurt for a 16-12 edge, capped off from a kill by Teelon. The visitors pulled within three at 20-17, but
Okwunne Ogbogu slammed home a kill, sparking a 5-1 run to end the match. Forster's kill ended the quarterfinal contest with the 25-18 win.
