AUGUSTA, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team rallied from a 2-0 deficit en route to a 3-2 victory at Augusta Saturday afternoon in a league contest.
The Pacers are now 24-4 on the season and conclude PBC play with a 10-2 mark.
Head coach
Glenn Cox's team lost the opening set 28-26 and the second frame 25-17 before reeling off the next three set wins.
Alie Smith continued her stellar season with a double-double, going for a match-best 20 kills along with 13 digs. For good measure, she added three assists and two blocks.
Christine Carroll slammed home 13 kills while hitting .310.
Kelsey Spurlin notched double figures with 12 kills and a .323 attack percentage.
Julia Forster added 11 kills in the victory.
Emily Teelon posted a double-double with 50 assists and 18 digs. She also added five kills on a .714 attack percentage.
Defensively,
Rebecca Martinez posted a match-best 34 digs. Natalie Perrault added 13.
Okwunne Ogbogu garnered a team-best four blocks.
USC Aiken trailed 7-5 in the third frame before Carroll's kill sparked a run for the visitors. Teelon had a kill before Smith went off for three straight points. Teelon and Spurlin added a kill apiece for a 12-7 advantage. Leading 15-14, the squad rattled off six of the next eight points for the 21-16 lead.
Trailing 14-13 in the fourth set, Spurlin and Carroll posted back-to-back kills. Holding a 17-16 edge, Forster, Smith and Carroll posted kills before Natalie Perrault served up an ace. A kill from Carroll pushed the margin to 22-17. The squad closed out the set with a 25-20 win.
The home team jumped on top 4-1, but Spurlin had a kill and an error pulled the Pacers within two. Down 5-3, Ogbogu had a kill. An error by the Jaguars, coupled with two kills from Forster and one from Carroll made it 8-5. Tied at 9-9, two miscues by the home team gave USC Aiken an 11-9 edge.
Leading 11-10, a mistake by a Jaguar and a kill from Smith pushed the margin to three at 13-10. Leading by two, 14-12, Ogbogu and Spurlin stuffed a shot for the final point in the come-from-behind win.
The Pacers return to action in the PBC Tournament. Seeding for the tournament will be announced following the conclusion of the regular season.
