USC Aiken Sweeps UNC Pembroke

PEMBROKE, N.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team posted a 3-0 victory at UNC Pembroke Tuesday evening in a league contest.

The Pacers are now 21-2 on the season, including 7-0 against conference competition.

Head coach Glenn Cox's team was paced by rookie Alie Smith's match-best 11 kills. Avery Macklin added eight kills while Julia Forster contributed seven. Alicia Hines netted six kills while Emily Teelon and Okwunne Ogbogu added five and four, respectively.

Teelon led everyone with 33 assists. She added eight digs for good measure.

Rebecca Martinez guided the defense with a team-best 17 digs. Natalie Perrault was solid on the back line, totaling 10 digs. She also served up a career-high six aces.

Tied at 14-14 in the opening set, Hines hammered home a kill to start a 4-0 spurt. Perrault served up a pair of aces while also garnering an assist to Teelon during the run. Holding a 19-16 advantage, Smith found the court for a kill, sparking a 6-0 surge. During the run, Ogbogu and Smith registered a block. Perrault and Ogbogu each garnered a kill before Smith slammed the door on the home squad with a thunderous block.

USC Aiken trailed 14-12 in the second frame before Hines stopped the bleeding with a kill. The point ignited the Pacers' offense en route to a 10-0 run. Forster accounted for back-to-back kills for a 15-14 lead. Perrault sliced the court for an ace before a miscue by the home squad pushed the score to 17-14.

Teelon notched an ace and a ball handling error made the score 19-14. Hines stuffed an attempt by the Braves before UNCP registered another error. Perrault's ace completed the 10-0 run. A few plays later, Ogbogu sent the teams into intermission with a kill for the six-point win.

USC Aiken jumped on top of the Braves in the third set by a 13-5 advantage and never looked back. Perrault served a pair of aces during the early spurt and Martinez added another. Leading 17-11, Macklin tallied back-to-back kills. Brynn Bonner's service ace forced a time-out by the home squad with the score at 20-11. Kelsey Spurlin's kill off a pass from Lauren Howard gave the visitors the 25-15 win.
