AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken men's soccer team played to a double-overtime 1-1 draw with Clayton State Saturday afternoon on Senior Day.
The Pacers are now 4-8-2 on the season, including a 2-4-1 record in league play.
Head coach
Ike Ofoje's team jumped on top with an early 1-0 goal. At the 4:09 mark,
Andre Simmond dribbled up the right side of the pitch and flicked the ball into the box.
Daniel Orillac was on the receiving end of the pass and promptly pounded the ball into the back of the net for the advantage.
The visitors tied it in the 18
th minute of action. Neither team would find the back of the net the rest of the way, but the match was not without suspense.
The Pacers had a flurry of attempts early on in the second period.
Aaron Richard missed wide while
Kento Ito and
Chris Perez each attempted shots on target, but both were stopped.
Driss Baraket's shot minutes later was also saved.
In the 86
th minute, USC Aiken earned a pair of corner kicks, resulting in a shot by Perez, but it was blocked.
Ofoje's group rocketed the lone shot in the first overtime, but Baraket's attempt was blocked.
Seconds into the second overtime session, Ito fired a shot, but it missed wide. Baraket and
Brett Smith each had attempts in the period, but both narrowly missed finding the back of the net.
For the match, USC Aiken held an 18-12 advantage in shots, including a 4-3 edge in shots on goals. Ofoje's team had nine corner kicks compared to five by the visitors.
Chase Boulton started the contest in the pipes while
Leonardo Targia played the final 91 minutes, stopping two shots.
At halftime, seniors
Samuel Andrews, Baraket, Boulton, Ito, Perez, Simmond, Smith and
Dave Stone were honored for their outstanding work and effort for their time at USC Aiken.
The Pacers return to action Wednesday when they travel to Catawba for a 7 p.m., match.
