AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken men's soccer team registered a 4-3 double overtime victory over Francis Marion Wednesday evening in a PBC contest.
The Pacers are now 4-6-1 on the season, including a 2-3 mark against league foes.
Trailing 1-0 entering the second half, head coach
Ike Ofoje's team knotted the contest quickly.
At the 47:53 mark,
Driss Baraket took possession of the ball and dribbled down the right side of the pitch. Inside the box, Baraket curled the ball into the upper left of the frame to make it 1-1.
In the 56
th minute, the Patriots took a 2-1 lead, but it would not last long.
At the 56:38 mark,
Andre Simmond took a free kick from 35 yards out. He played it into the box where Jorvel Tobierre headed home the pass, knotting the contest at 2-2.
The Patriots took a 3-2 lead on a penalty kick at the 83:28 mark, but Ofoje's team continued to battle. In the 87
th minute of play, Baraket dribbled toward the end-line on the right side of the pitch. He flicked the ball across the goal to
Andre Simmond, who one-timed it into the back of the net, making it 3-3.
Both teams had outstanding chances in overtime, but the defenses stepped up. In the second session, the Pacers dominated the play and in the 110
th minute, it paid off.
USC Aiken managed to get a free kick and Simmond played it into the box for
Chukwudi Apugo, who found the back of the net for the golden goal.
For the match,
Leonardo Targia played the final 99 minutes in goal. He stopped a shot. USC Aiken held a 17-9 advantage in shots, including a 7-4 edge in shots on goal. Ofoje's group had 13 corner kicks compared to six for the visitors.
