Pacers Shut Down Falcons, 73-53

AIKEN, S.C. - The University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team registered a 73-53 victory over Montevallo Monday afternoon in a Peach Belt Conference contest.

The Pacers are now 10-7 overall and 6-2 in league play while the Falcons are 4-11 overall and 1-7 against conference foes.

Rachelle Aupont came off the bench to fire a game-high 22 points, including 15 from behind the three-point stripe. Kwajelin Farrar accounted for another double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds while Carly Gilreath totaled 10 points to go along with a game-high eight assists.

Emily Waters posted seven points and seven rebounds while Jasmine Coach chipped in six points and six boards.

After falling behind 10-2, head coach Mark Miller's team slowly started to make a comeback. Aupont was fouled on a three-point attempt and calmly connected on all three charity tosses. Montevallo hit a three-pointer, but Farrar converted back-to-back jumpers to make it 13-9.

Aupont sank an inside shot off a pass from Emily Waters and with 2:30 to play in the quarter, Waters scored a bucket to knot it at 13-13. Although Carly Gilreath's shot gave the Pacers a slim 15-13 lead, the Falcons netted the final four points of the frame for a 17-15 lead.

Jasmine Carter nailed a three-pointer to get things going in the second quarter and Miller's team maintained control the rest of the half. The squad pushed its advantage to five at 31-26 on a jumper by Jasmine Coach with 2:33 to play in the period, but Montevallo managed to pull within one with 1:04 to go.

USC Aiken closed out the half on a 5-0 run – and all five points were via the hot hand of Aupont. She nailed a three-pointer with 37 seconds to go before hitting two-of-three when she was fouled on a last-second three-point attempt. Her two charity tosses gave the Pacers a 36-30 lead heading into the third frame.

The third stanza started off slowly, but USC Aiken increased its margin from six to 11 after jumpers by Farrar and Waters for a 43-33 advantage. Leading 46-37, Waters hit a free throw and Kate Duff flipped a shot over her shoulder for two more points for a 49-37 lead with 1:44 to go in the frame.

USC Aiken extended its lead to 16 at 59-43 on a three-ball from Aupont. After a quick bucket by the visitors, Aupont lined up and connected from downtown once again.

The Pacers eventually stretched the lead to 19 on a lay-up by Farrar with 1:01 to play and ended up with the 20-point margin after Aubrey Lukacsko buried a three-ball from the corner for the final points.

For the game, Miller's team outscored the visitors 30-24 in the paint. The squad forced 13 turnovers and converted them into 15 points. USC Aiken held a 26-7 advantage in second-chance points and tallied a 39-21 margin off the bench.

The Pacers return to action Wednesday when they travel to Armstrong State for a 5:30 p.m., start. Live stats and video will be available at PacerSports.com.
